American rockers Journey have gone down in history after their hit Don’t Stop Believin’ was named the number one single of the 20th Century.

The group’s catchy tune has seen a boost in popularity in recent years after the stars of Glee performed the 1980’s track on its first season in 2009.

The bandmembers performed live on the streets of New York as part of Today’s Summer Concert Series and they were presented with a special plaque to commemorate the feat, which was certified by analysts at media research company Nielsen SoundScan.

Friday was also a big day for fans of 80’s icons Debbie Gibson and I Think We’re Alone Now star Tiffany. The pop duo entertained crowds at Central Park on Good Morning America.

Manny Pacquiao and Journey’s New Lead Singer Have a Lot in Common | Bleacher Report

As remarkable as this story is Arnel just like the face of boxing’s Manny Pacquiao. They are both from the Philippines and they both have inspiring rags to riches stories of overcoming utter poverty in their homeland.

Pineda, just like Pacquiao, grew up extremely poor in the slums of the Philippines. They both left their homes in their early teens to seek income to provide for their families.

Both lived on the streets and sold what ever he could to survive. According to Pineda’s biography he was sleeping in public parks and benches and would collect bottles and other recyclables for money. Arnel often rationed a Marie biscuit as his meal for two days.

Journey drummer Deen Castronovo is living the dream | MLive.com

CLARKSTON — A veteran of acts such as Ozzy Osbourne, Social Distortion, Paul Rodgers and Bad English, drummer Deen Castronovo said joining Journey in the late 1990s was part of a lifelong dream.”There were two bands I wanted to play with when I was young: KISS and Journey,” Castronovo told The Flint Journal via telephone. “I’ve gotten one and I’m happy. One of those is great. I’m a happy man.”

Castronovo will be on stage with Journey when the band performs at DTE Energy Music Theatre with special guests Foreigner and Night Ranger on Sunday.

Journey’s Neal Schon talks new album, Eclipse, The Sopranos, guitars and gear

Last year, I spoke with Kevin, who said that there were “opposing forces in Journey.” He claimed that “some members want it to be a heavy rock band, while others want to have big hit ballads.”

[laughs] “Well, that’s no secret to anyone. I like playing it all. But if I were given my choice, I’d pick eight rock songs and two power ballads. That’s the way I’ve always been.

“Ever since Jonathan joined the band, he’s tended to bring in the big ballads, and I bring the rock. What’s different about this record is that I finally stood my ground and said, ‘No. We’re not doing the same fucking thing. I’m not interested in the same record over and over and over.’ We have so many ways to go – grooves, cool tempos, heavier songs that aren’t three minutes long. That’s what I’m interested in exploring. I want to take some chances.”

You say that Jonathan brings in the ballads, but yet you’re both listed as co-writers on all the songs. In what ways do you two collaborate?

“It varies. With some songs, I’ll bring in the full musical bed, but Jonathan will work on the lyrics. Then there’s songs that Jon brings in and I’ll rearrange them – change the bridges, put in a different solo section, a different outro. It goes all kinds of ways, but we definitely collaborate.”

Several years ago, you found your current singer, Arnel, on YouTube. Did that feel strange to be surfing the web and looking for somebody to join a huge band like Journey?

“No, it didn’t feel weird. We needed a singer, and I didn’t want to go through the normal audition process where you get a package with a CD and a photo – but you don’t really know what the guy might look like on stage; you don’t know how he is at fronting a band. It’s so time-consuming, opening hundreds of folders and popping in CDs, listening to half and song and going, ‘Uh-uh… Next!’ Believe me, you do this for a week straight and you’re insane. So I didn’t want to deal with that whole thing.

“I turned to YouTube because I liked the concept of watching raw footage and seeing guys on stage being totally real. Still, YouTube can be sort of an endless void. I looked up rock and soul singers, and after two days of not coming up with much – and believe me, I was at the point of giving up, like, ‘Is there even a guy out there?’ – I finally stumbled across a link to a video of Arnel singing a Survivor song. Out of frustration, I punched it, and suddenly, this guy’s voice came out… ‘Wow! Who is that?’ [laughs] I followed the link back to Arnel’s site, and there were all of these videos of him singing everything from AC/DC to Led Zeppelin to Journey to Sting to you name it. The guy did everything!

“I didn’t believe it at first. I was like, ‘No way. This guy can’t be that good.’ I went out and took a motorcycle ride and came back to the computer and watched him again. ‘Goddammit, the guy really is that good! He’s for real.’ [laughs] It was amazing.

“I’m glad I had YouTube as a means for discovering him. Actually tracking him down and getting ahold of him in Manila in the Philippines was a major ordeal. And getting him out of the country was even harder. But we managed to put him on a flight to audition for us, and we were blown away. We worked with him for several days, and each day he sounded better and better. The guy’s amazing. No one deserves this gig like Arnel. He’s so talented and is such a nice person. We’ve become great friends.”

What about the interview he gave to Rolling Stone a couple of years ago in which he apparently said how unhappy and disillusioned he was on tour? Was that really the case, or were his comments taken out of context, as he and the band quickly tried to clarify?

“Here’s the deal, it’s journalism, you know? He’s not used to American journalism, and especially anybody from Rolling Stone. [laughs] You’re a journalist, so hopefully you know what I’m talking about. What he said and how he meant it and the way they took it were totally different things. He wasn’t used to being on tour, he was very tired… We definitely put him to the test on the road, no doubt. But if he were unhappy, he would’ve been gone by now. Or he would’ve left the tour right then and there – we didn’t have anything other than a handshake deal with him.”

So everything’s fine with Arnel and the band? He’s fully integrated?

“He’s here. He’s 100 percent. I couldn’t see doing this thing without him now.”

When Arnel Pineda was plucked from obscurity to front one of the biggest AOR bands on the planet expectations were, understandably, low. In fact the majority of Journey fans simply hoped the likeable Filipino could get by – belting out the old hits to a reasonable standard and providing a final shot in the arm to Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain and co..

Eclipse is the definitive proof that Pineda has done all that and then some. A classic Journey album with a modern rock edge, it offers the singer the perfect platform to finally stamp his own identity on this enduring global phenomenon. Having long since shed the label of tribute band troubadour, Pineda is reborn as a confident singer and consummate professional – fronting a concept album which breathes new life into a band constantly overshadowed by its ubiquitous back catalogue.

Rocktopia – Journey – ‘Eclipse’ – CD Review

Suffice to say that Neal Schon was right: it really rocks!

It seems like every Journey album since ‘Raised On Radio’ has been prefaced by guitarist Neil Schon claiming that it’s going to be a full-on rock album, only for the finished article (excepting perhaps the poorly produced ‘Generations’) to be the usual ballad-heavy affair – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as no-one does ballads like Journey does. However, I’m sure the news has already leaked out that they’ve only gone and done it this time, Schon obviously getting his wish with ‘Eclipse’ and giving you more riffs and notes for your buck than ever before.

Opener ‘City Of Hope’ is a statement of intent. Built upon great guitar parts and an uplifting arrangement, it’s a rocking opener that still doesn’t scrimp on melody with Arnel Pineda delivering his gorgeous melody lines without a hint of an accent. In the great tradition of Journey opening tracks it hooks you in and will stick in your head for weeks, the rock-out ending and shredding Neal Schon solo being the icing on the cake. ‘Edge Of The Moment’ continues in a similar vein with subtle, cheese-free hooks, loads of guitar and a chorus that takes a while to get your head around because it’s so un-Journey-like. If that’s a shocker then ‘Chain Of Love’ will be even more so, Jon Cain’s gentle piano and Pineda’s Perry-esque vocal soon giving way to one of the heaviest riffs that the band have ever come up with. The combination of Schon’s guitar and Cain’s keys parts are reminiscent of the darker songs on the ‘Frontiers’ album and Cain adds real menace to some of the instrumental sections whilst the dark vocal melodies leave no chance of it ever becoming a single.

Journey Blasts Panamá « Life & Bits

When I first heard that Journey planned a concert in Panamá City, Panamá, I was unsure if I wanted to buy tickets for the show. On one hand, I love Journey’s music and I grew up hearing the music. Many songs from the group bring vivid memories of those days. However, I worried they were just an over-the-hill band on a tour to cash on their past days of fame. My wife and I decided to go to the concert when a friend told us he was attending the show with a group; we all bought tickets together. That was the best decision we could’ve made!

Journey did not disappoint. On Saturday, April 9, 2011 Journey entered on stage of a packed Figali Convention Center and proceeded with a non-stop energetic concert that kept the audience standing most of the time. Journey blasted their music causing an euphoria that could be felt all around. They played all their hits from the 80′s.

Group’s singer, Arnel Pineda, infused the scene with so much energy that it spilled over from the stage to the fans who were singing and screaming every single song. I have to admit I almost lost my voice myself. His voice resembles in many ways, the signature voice by Steve Perry, but with his own style. This concert felt like they played a two-hours long popurri. It was a continuous flow, a river, of music that splashed everybody. A total of 17 songs were included in the medley.

Two shows in discussions with New York State Fair: Journey/Foreigner/Night Ranger and Sugarland | syracuse.com

So O’Hara won’t confirm that the triple-bill of Journey, Foreigner and Night Rangers will play the fair’s grandstand on Aug. 30 and country music Sugarland will appear there on Sept. 3.

“We’re in discussions with them,” O’Hara said this afternoon. “No contracts have been signed at this point.”

Journey played to more than 16,000 at the grandstand for a show with Heart and Cheap Trick in August 2008. Sugarland, led by charismatic singer Jennifer Nettles, was part of the show that drew 17,303 to set a grandstand attendance record when it opened for superstar Kenny Chesney in September 2007.
