Through more than 30-years of making memorable music such as “Open Arms” and “Any Way You Want It,” Journey has shifted through personnel and style changes like most of us change clothes. Beginning in 1973, the group played only instrumental pieces and called themselves the Golden Gate Rhythm Section (GGRS) after developing a strong following in the San Francisco area. A local radio station helped to bring them into the era we now know as Journey by holding a contest (yes, where the general public votes) on what its new name should be. “Journey” was born. In 1977 the band was pressured by studio execs to hire a lead singer. Steve Perry joined the band that year and immediate success was found in its next albums, Infinity, Evolution, Departure and Captured, with all four albums going platinum.
